“I met Sam in Nashville, completely unexpectedly and [he] was really sweet,” Calum tells ABC Radio. “He’s had the same sort of experience as me growing up with his sexuality, using that in his music, and so he kinda mentored me a little bit.”

Calum says one of the best pieces of advice Sam gave him was to “try and take a bit of family with you wherever you go — whether that’s a little memento or whether that’s actually them — your mum, your sister — just to keep your feet on the ground, I guess.”

Calum, who got his start on the British version of The X Factor, says he’s grateful to have someone who can help him navigate the world of pop music stardom.

He explains, “It’s great that I can pick up the phone to people like Sam who have been through this crazy industry and have survived and are there for me, y’know?”

“You Are the Reason” is from Calum’s debut album, Only Human.  Next month, he’ll hit the road as one of the opening acts for Pentatonix, on the a capella group’s summer tour.  That trek gets underway July 12 in Salt Lake City, UT.
