Phil Collins’ marriage track record isn’t exactly stellar, but it looks like he’s giving his third go-round another try.
Speaking to Billboard about the aftermath of his 2008 divorce from his third wife, Orianne Cevey, Phil says he developed a drinking problem. “I’d wake up, turn the TV on and have a glass of wine. You look up at the end of the day and you’ve knocked off a couple of bottles — and you’re still sober!” he says. “I spent way too much time horizontal. It started to be bad for my body. I almost died. My organs were beginning to shut down. But I’m all right now.”
He adds, “I bought [a house in Miami, where Orianne lives,] about six months ago. I’m actually back with my third wife — I haven’t really talked about it. We’ve been together for a while, and nobody’s noticed.”
People notes that when Phil and Orianne split, their divorce settlement was the biggest in British history: a reported $46.68 million.
In the same interview, done to promote the reissues of his albums Face Value and Both Sides, Phil says he doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to tour again due to ongoing health problems, but adds, “My kids want me to do shows so they can brag to their friends. I intend on doing some things. I stopped going into the studio because I was sad, but now I’m getting a taste of it again.”
As for his much-hyped collaboration with Adele, which never actually happened, Phil tells Billboard that he’s happy the singer isn’t slamming him in the press, after he dissed her as a “slippery little fish” for not following through with him.
“She sent me a piece of music that I began working on, but then she was very difficult to find. She had a kid — all this [personal] stuff was happening to her, unbeknownst to me,” Phil explains. “So nothing came of it.”
He adds, ” I was very pleased to hear…[that] she’s being asked about this with the release of her new album, [and] she said, ‘It was too early, and I was too scared.’ That’s better than ‘He was terrible.’ I was very grateful for her gentle way of looking at it.”
