These cruises have been popular for a while, but Melissa’s been waiting for the perfect situation.  “I wanted it to be special,” she tells ABC Radio. “I didn’t want to just kinda fit myself and my fans into someone else’s sort of mold.”

She adds, “Once I felt like I could get the kind of food I wanted, the kind of subjects I wanted to…focus on, I felt like I could do it. So we’re headed out…and I’m actually really looking forward to it.”

Besides Melissa, the five-day cruise features workshops and a dozen other acts, including season-nine American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox and, for one day only, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. It from Tampa, Florida today, and stops at Key West, Florida and Cozumel, Mexico.

“My fans are just amazing and they’ll come with me on anything I choose to do,” says Melissa, about her fans’ excitement about the cruise.

Melissa expects to be able walk around the ship freely, and isn’t worried about fans stopping her every second for selfies.

“The worst thing they’re gonna do is hug me too hard,” she laughs. “I always say…they just wanna have me over for dinner, that’s really what my fans wanna do…Yeah, I’ll take a few selfies but hey…they came on my boat. I don’t have a problem.”

While Melissa wanted to bring her four kids with her, she can’t take them out of school so, she says, “It’s just gonna be myself and my lovely wife.”  That’s Linda Wallem, an actress, writer and producer who co-created the show Nurse Jackie.
