On August 16, Madonna will celebrate a milestone birthday, and she’s turning the event into a fundraiser for her favorite charity.
In honor of her 60th birthday, Madonna has teamed up with Facebook and Ripple — a global payment company — to encourage fans to donate to Raising Malawi, her charity foundation that helps orphans and vulnerable children in that African nation. Four of Madonna’s six children are from Malawi.
The fundraiser, hosted on the Queen of Pop’s Facebook page, runs from today through August 31. You can either donate directly to Madonna’s fundraiser, or set up one of your own. One hundred percent of the contributions will go directly to Raising Malawi’s work with a local orphanage. Ripple will match all donations.
In a statement, Madonna says, “For my birthday, I can think of no better gift than connecting my global family with this beautiful country and the children who need our help most.”
She adds, “Every dollar raised will go directly to meals, schools, uniforms and healthcare. I want to come together with my friends, fans and supporters to change the lives of Malawian children and let them know they are nurtured, protected and loved.”
Madonna adopted her children Mercy, David and twins Stella and Esther from Malawi. She also has daughter Lourdes, from a relationship with Carlos Leon, and son Rocco, from her marriage to director Guy Ritchie.
