Chuck Hodes/FOXWhen he’s not singing hits like “Want to Want Me,” Jason Derulo has a side job as a judge on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance.  The new season premiered last night, but there’s a new twist: it’s billed as The Next Generation because all the dancers are between the ages of eight and 13.  But Jason says he and his fellow judges — Paula Abdul, Nigel Lythgoe and teen dancer Maddie Ziegler — aren’t worried that the kids won’t be able to take their critical comments.

“It’s super dope,” Jason tells ABC Radio about the new season. “I mean these kids are so used to criticism. They’re so used to having their teachers tell them, ‘Point your toe! You’re not doing this right! You’re not doing that right!’ So like it’s not like they’re not used to positive constructive criticism.”

But as Jason notes, that doesn’t mean that they’re going to go all Simon Cowell on the kids, either.

“You never wanna, you know, tear somebody down,” he tells ABC Radio. “So you know it’s the same…for these kids. You know, we’re gonna tell them how it is. We’ve been telling them how it is, but at the same time, they know how to deal with it.”

Jason will also be performing on ABC’s new music-centric limited series Greatest Hits, with premieres June 30, and he’ll close out Good Morning America’s summer concert series on September 2.
