Kenny Loggins, Kim Carnes, REO Speedwagon, Kool & the Gang and Rick Springfield will perform their signature ’80s hits on tonight’s premiere episode of ABC’s Greatest Hits, a six-week music series featuring artists of different eras doing collaborations, honoring songs of the past, and performing their classics.
“It’s really a celebration of music…a specific period from 1980 to 2005, which was a pretty rich period in American music,” says executive producer Ken Ehrlich [ERR-lick].
Greatest Hits is co-hosted by rising country star Kelsea [KELL-see] Ballerini and Arsenio Hall. “We literally have the greatest artists [and] the greatest hits, and nobody’s there to promote their product, concert [or] album,” Arsenio says. “ They’re just there to love on music!”
Tonight’s episode focuses on 1980 to 1985, and includes performances of “Footloose,” “Bette Davis Eyes,” “Jessie’s Girl,” “Celebration” and more. Jason Derulo will sing Michael Jackson‘s “Human Nature,” while REO Speedwagon will perform with rapper Pitbull, whose latest single, “Messin’ Around,” is a reworking of REO’s “Take It on the Run.”
“I’m still a working musician so it’s always good to get your name out there and have people remember that you can still sing and you can still work,” Kenny Loggins tells ABC Radio about appearing on the show. Rick Springfield adds, “I thought it was a great idea: new and old stuff kinda coming together. It’s weird that no one’s actually done it before!”
Upcoming episodes of Greatest Hits will feature duets between the Backstreet Boys and Meghan Trainor, and Kenny Loggins and Train‘s Pat Monahan, to name a few. Co-host Kelsea Ballerini will perform a mash-up of Britney Spears, Shania Twain and Maroon 5 hits, while Bonnie Raitt will sing with R&B vocalist Andra Day.
Greatest Hits debuts at 9 p.m. tonight on ABC.
