Gwen Stefani is “for sure” in love with Blake Shelton, she reveals to Vanity Fair in a new interview. Though she doesn’t go into details about their relationship, she does say the romance helped her unlock her creativity.
“I don’t really want to go into that relationship, and God knows what’s going to happen,” she says. “But I feel like I’m in an amazing songwriting place; instead of being closed off, I’m thinking about positivity and how I can do something creative.”
She adds, “I’m just doing what I want to do. It’s so incredible to be in that zone. I’m always looking for the next song, and now I don’t have to be insecure or write about heartache.”
That heartache — namely, her painful divorce from rocker Gavin Rossdale — did influence her first single from This Is What the Truth Feels Like. She reportedly wrote “Used to Love You” after she found out Gavin was allegedly having an affair with their nanny. But Gwen says it wasn’t a revenge song.
“I went through a real period of anger,” she says, “but I felt like this song was almost like a forgiveness song. It’s admitting, I used to love you and now I don’t. I opened this channel to writing again — it was me being honest, being real.”
That lyrical realness helped Gwen secure her first number-one solo album on the Billboard 200 album chart last week. She’s set to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend.
