If you’re hopelessly devoted to Grease, tonight is your night: Grease: Live! premieres on Fox. The musical revamp of the 1978 film features Carly Rae Jepsen as Pink Lady Frenchy, R&B trio Boyz II Men as Teen Angel and DNCE as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers. The two-hour special will also include Jessie J’s rendition of “Grease (Is the Word).”
Boyz II Men will be singing “Beauty School Dropout” to Carly’s Frenchy. “It’s definitely a classic, and you don’t want to go too far away from the original,” member Nathan Morris tells Rolling Stone “We’ll add our vocal Boyz II Men spin. It definitely won’t be the same, but we’ll try to hold up to the integrity of what it really was in the beginning because that’s what everybody fell in love with.”
Right before that iconic moment in the show, Carly will get to sing an original song — called “Angel” — written especially for her. The singer tells ABC Radio that the producers wanted to add some new elements to the Fox production.
“They felt it was our duty, almost, to add more material because [Grease] is such a smorgasbord of eras, and the history of this story is that every time the musical takes shape or the movie takes shape, new material is added,” she says. “And for our own generation to get to add to that I think is very, very cool.”
Grease: Live! stars Julianne Hough as Sandy, Aaron Tveit as Danny and Vanessa Hudgens as bad girl Rizzo. It airs at 7 p.m. ET on Fox. The Grease: Live! soundtrack is also available today.
