Sire RecordsCyndi Lauper’s “detour” into country music is coming this spring. DETOUR — an album featuring the pop singer’s renditions of country classics from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s — is due out May 6.

The album will feature contributions from some Country Music Hall of Famers including Willie Nelson, Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris, who’s featured on the title track. Jewel and her yodeling skills also make an appearance on the song “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” the first country song by a woman, singer Patsy Montana, to sell one million copies.

While the collection of country covers may seem like a big change for Cyndi, it turns out it’s not very far from her roots. “When I was a really young kid, country music was pop music, so this is what we grew up listening to,” she recalls. “These songs are part of some of my earliest memories so it has been an absolute thrill to revisit them.”
